The Virginia Highlands and Bath County have a rich and diverse architectural design legacy, including a blend of vernacular, clapboard farmhouses, refined Virginia classical houses, and imported Arts and Crafts and European Romantic architectural languages.

In an effort to honor and emulate the historic architecture of the Alleghany Highlands, Homestead Preserve, in partnership with leading designers from both North America and Europe, developed the Homestead Preserve Pattern Book.  The Pattern Book is a comprehensive resource document for design professionals, building professionals, and property owners at Homestead Preserve and reflects the native historic design styles of Bath County as well as guidelines for building homes that blend seamlessly into the Alleghany Highlands landscape.
